The application of a name (ming, word) and/or a tag (brda) to some item, whether or not that item is validly knowable. Except in the case of a Buddha, designation occurs only in conceptual cognition, in which case the name is designated on an audio category (sgra-spyi), its meaning (don, significance) is designated on its corresponding object/meaning category (don-spyi) and the tag is designated on the referent object (btags-chos) of the object/meaning category.
