Rime tradition

A nonsectarian movement started in the Derge district of Kham, eastern Tibet, by Tai Situ Chokyi Jungnay (Ta'i Si-tu Chos-kyi 'byung-gnas) in the mid 18th century to revitalize and preserve the Sakya, Nyingma and Kagyu teachings. In the mid-19th century, Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye ('Jam-mgon Kong-sprul Blo-gros mtha'-yas), Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo ('Jam-dbyangs mKhyen-brtse dbang-po) and Choggyur Lingpa (mChog-gyur Gling-pa) placed the emphasis on a nonsectarian approach to these three traditions. Dza Paltrul Rinpoche (rDza dPal-sprul Rin-po-che) purportedly extended this approach to include the Gelug tradition as well.
