The Significance of Renunciation on the Buddhist Path

In the original languages, the term “renunciation” has the connotation of becoming certain that we want to leave something. To leave our problems and suffering, we need to first develop the determination to be free of them. If we really want to develop renunciation, we have to realize what it is that we renounce. It’s not merely the suffering of unhappiness or the suffering of change. What we want to get out of and get rid of is “the all-pervasive affecting suffering,” which is uncontrollably recurring rebirth.
