Translated from Sanskrit, by Dr. Alexander Berzin, Harvard University, 1967, revised June 2020. The annotation is based on explanations by Professor Masatoshi Nagatomi during the seminar on this text, comparing the Sanskrit and Classical Chinese versions, and supplemented in consultation with the annotation to the translation of the text by Dr. Berzin’s classmate in that seminar, Musashi Tachikawa, published as “A Sixth-Century Manual of Indian Logic (A Translation of the Nyāyapraveśa)” Journal of Indian Philosophy 1 (1971), 111–145. Although the colophon of the Tibetan translation states that the author was Dignāga (480–540), it is only attributed to him. The actual author was the seventh-century, non-Buddhist Nyāya logician, Śaṅkarasvāmin, who composed the text as a summary introduction to Dignāga’s system of Buddhist logic. This work subsequently became the most widely studied treatise on Buddhist logic in China and Japan.
