Developing bodhichitta starts with renunciation, which is the foundation for compassion. In order to develop compassion, it’s necessary to purify and train the mind and the heart. On the path, we need to avoid the dangers of anger and pride, which would be damaging our practice. When we develop the dedicated heart of bodhichitta, we aspire to achieve a state of enlightenment as a Buddha in order to be able to help everybody. We then enter into all the practices that will actually bring us to enlightenment and the ability to benefit everyone. These practices are the six perfections.
