Up until the establishment of the government of Tibet under the Great Fifth Dalai Lama, the history of Tibet spanned the periods of the early Yarlung kings, the Tibetan Empire with its introduction and later persecution of Buddhism, the breakup of the empire and the reintroduction of Buddhism from India, Mongol overlordship under Sakya administration, and the Pagmodru, Rinpung and Tsangpa Hegemonies.
