Facing Death Realistically

Reflecting on death is a central practice on the Buddhist spiritual path. It shows that without genuine mindfulness of death, even sincere intentions to practice Dharma remain ineffective. Although we may understand teachings intellectually, we often fail to apply them in daily life due to distraction and attachment. Awareness of death cuts through procrastination and brings clarity to our priorities. By contemplating the certainty and unpredictability of death, we are encouraged to practice without delay. Superficial awareness of death can be contrasted with deep, transformative understanding that leads to actual change in behavior. Thus, mindfulness of death is a powerful method for turning the mind toward what truly matters.
