The "self" asserted in the Samkhya and Yoga schools of non-Buddhist Indian tenet systems. Equivalent to mere passive consciousness, it is permanent in the sense of being both static, unchanging and eternal, all-pervasive with the universe, partless (not made of the three universal constituents of matter – rajas, sattva and tamas), the conscious experiencer of the results of karmic action, but not the agent of actions.
