Something on the side of an object or phenomenon that (1) establishes the existence, in general, of the object or phenomenon, and (2) also establishes what the object or phenomenon is. A self-nature could do this just by its own power, or by its power in association with conceptual designation with a word or concept. The term may also be translated as "self-establishing nature."
