Relating to a Spiritual Mentor in a Healthy Manner

Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey explains the role of a spiritual mentor in guiding practitioners along the path according to the lam-rim tradition. A healthy relationship with such a mentor is grounded in respect, commitment and careful prior examination of the teacher’s qualities. There are many benefits of proper reliance, including spiritual progress, protection from negative influences and the accumulation of positive force and deep awareness. At the same time, there are drawbacks that arise from lack of commitment, doubt or disrespect toward the mentor. The aim of the relationship with a guru is transforming one’s own attitudes, especially by developing reasoned confidence and appreciation of the mentor’s kindness. This relationship is the root of all spiritual development, through which both provisional and ultimate goals can be achieved.
