The point of entering a disciple-mentor relationship is to gain spiritual and emotional maturity through developing our discriminating abilities and the warmth of our hearts. Through the Kadam tradition’s guru-meditation, disciples cultivate and make a habit of feeling deeply convinced of the good qualities of their mentors and appreciating their kindness. This leads us to trust in them and in their ability to guide us correctly. Our appreciation of their kindness and the respect we develop for them translates into actions. The most meaningful way for disciples to demonstrate trust and respect is to follow the advice of their mentors, especially concerning their spiritual practices.
