Commentary on “Kalachakra Six-Session Guru-Yoga” – Tsenshap Serkong Rinpoche

Serkong Rinpoche explains the Kalachakra six-session guru-yoga in the context of the lam-rim graded stages of the path, focusing on the practices of taking refuge, karma and bodhichitta. The Kalachakra system addresses external cycles (such as lunar and solar cycles), internal cycles (bodily energy-winds and breaths) and alternative cycles that one needs to purify through taking the initiation, keeping the vows and doing generation-stage and complete-stage practices. Taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha is emphasized as a foundational step, driven by dread of death, conviction in the sources of safe direction and compassion for all beings. The teachings on karma highlight the consequences of constructive and destructive actions, with detailed explanations of how intentions and actions, such as killing, lead to specific ripening and comprehensive results affecting one’s rebirth and environment. The practice of six-session guru-yoga involves visualization of the Kalachakra Buddha-figure, taking refuge and generating bodhichitta, doing the seven-limb practice, making requests to the spiritual master, visualizing oneself as Kalachakra, retaking the vows and dedication of positive force, and all of that is done within the context of meditation on voidness.
