The Process of Death, Bardo and Rebirth

The clear light level of mental activity and energy-wind is the subtlest basis of all experience and remains continuous throughout death, bardo and rebirth. According to the Guhyasamaja Tantra description, during the process of death, mental activity and the energy-winds dissolve through eight progressive stages from gross cognition to clear light. Each stage is marked by specific outer physical signs and inner appearances that reflect their gradual withdrawal from the gross body and conceptual activity. The dissolution culminates in the clear light of death, while the reversal sequence gives rise to the successive stages of bardo existence and rebirth. The eighty indicative conceptual minds and the three subtlest appearance-makers play a central role in the transition between gross and subtlest levels of consciousness. Karmic tendencies and the habits of grasping for self-established existence shape the appearances experienced throughout death, bardo and rebirth. The bardo body arises from subtle energy-wind and persists until the conditions for a new rebirth are complete, with repeated cycles occurring if necessary. The Guhyasamaja presentation is compared with related explanations from other systems, particularly the Kalachakra system, highlighting both common principles and doctrinal differences.
