Brought on by an inciting karmic impulse (sems-pa’i las), which is a compelling karmic impulse of the mind, namely the mental factor of an urge: (1) In the Vaibhashika, Sautrantika-Svatantrika and Prasangika tenet systems, a compelled karmic impulse of the body or speech and thus a form of a physical phenomenon. It includes both (a) the revealing form of the shape or movement of the body or of the sound of the voice, for implementing a method for committing an action of the body or speech and (b) a nonrevealing form, such as that of a vow, that starts with the revealing form and continues even after the action has reached its finale and, in the case of a vow, continues to cause constant restraint from violating the vow. (2) In the Sautrantika, Chittamatra and Yogachara-Svatantrika tenet systems, a compelled karmic impulse for an action of body or speech. Thus, like an inciting karmic impulse, it too is the mental factor of an urge, which, like a magnet, now draws the sensory consciousness and its additional accompanying mental factors to focus on the basis for an action of body or speech and to implement a method for committing the action. A series of such incited mental urges bring on the initiation, sustaining and ending of the action.
