Of the four categories of objects of focus to employ in shamatha and vipashyana meditation, focus on one of the following, each of which includes all the items in the other three categories of objects of focus: (1) pervasive objects that are mental derivatives together with discursive thought (rnam-par rtog-pa-dang bcas-pa'i gzugs-brnyan), (2) pervasive objects that are mental derivatives without discursive thought (rnam-par rtog-pa med-pa'i gzugs-brnyan), (3) pervasive objects that are the extent of existent phenomena (dngos-po'i mtha'), and (4) pervasive objects with the needed goals thoroughly established (dgos-pa yongs-su-grub-pa).
