One of the branches of the eightfold noble path. (a) For ordinary beings, as part of the higher training in discriminating awareness, an understanding similar to that of the four noble truths. (b) For aryas, the branch that thoroughly cuts off – namely, a correct realization of the sixteen aspects of the four noble truths and their lack of the two types of impossible “souls” (their selflessness of a person and selflessness of phenomena) that an arya maintains during subsequent attainment (post-meditation) periods.
