Line of seven patriarchs

A lineage of masters, following the Buddha and staring with Mahakashyapa ('Od-srung chen-po, skt. Mahākāśyapa), Ananda (Kun-dga'-bo. skt. Ānanda), Shanakavasin (Sha-na'i gos-can, skt Śāṇakavāsin), Upagupta (Nyer-sbas, skt. Upagupta), Dhirtika (Dhi'-ti-ka, skt. Dṛtika), Krishna (Nag-po, skt. Kṛṣṇa) and Sudarshana (Legs-mthong-can, skt. Sudarśana), representing spiritual authority over the monastic sangha. Its transmission was represented by the passing on of the Buddha's robe.
