Explanation of the Six Preparatory Practices

Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey explains the structure and importance of the six preparatory practices done before a meditation session. These practices, drawn from traditional teachings, help create the proper conditions for effective meditation and spiritual progress. They begin with cleaning the meditation space and arranging respectful representations of a Buddha’s body, speech and mind. The proper way of making offerings is then explained, stressing sincerity, the absence of hypocrisy and the importance of motivation. Further, Geshe Dhargyey explains adopting a correct physical posture, calming the mind and establishing a constructive intention through taking safe direction and developing bodhichitta. The preparatory practices also include the seven-limb prayer and mandala offering, presented as methods for building up positive force, purifying obstacles and laying the foundation for deeper realization. Finally, they include invoking the inspiration of the lineage masters through making requests, which helps the mind become more receptive.
