Of the sutra and tantra methods for mahamudra meditation, the Fourth Panchen Lama elaborates the sutra methods in his “Root Text for Mahamudra.” In general, there are two approaches in the sutra method: the first is to gain a meditative state of concentration on the mind and then a correct view of voidness; the second is to gain a correct view first and then concentration on the mind. Here, the Fourth Panchen Lama presents the first method, which means first to gain shamatha on the conventional nature of the mind and then joined shamatha and vipashyana on the mind’s deepest nature, its voidness.
