This Mahayana meditation of the four close placements of mindfulness are on the body, the feelings, the mind, and the mental factors. It focuses on the body, representing true suffering; on feelings, representing the true origin or cause of suffering; on the mind, representing the true stopping of suffering; and on the mental factors namely, discriminating awareness, representing the true pathway, the true path leading to the true stopping of suffering. By means of dependent arising, true stoppings and the attainment of liberation and enlightenment are possible through this practice of these four close placements of mindfulness.
