Dependent arising

The reliance of something on something other than itself for establishing its existence: (1) the reliance of all functional, nonstatic phenomena on causes and conditions for establishing their existence; (2) the mutual reliance of two phenomena on each other for establishing their existence, such as long and short, whole and parts and so on; (3) the reliance of both static and nonstatic phenomena on their parts for establishing their existence; (4) the reliance of all phenomena on mental labeling for establishing their existence; (5) in the context of the twelve links of dependent arising, the reliance of twelve factors on each other, starting with unawareness (ignorance), for bringing about and perpetuating samsaric rebirth; (6) in some non-Gelug systems that assert going beyond dependent arising, the reliance of all samsaric phenomena on unawareness for establishing their existence.
